So after a small gap i am posting my next article.. about the Spam protection offered in Gmail, Yahoo mail and an easy way to identify spam mails and the orginal.
Spam spam spam.. everyone hates that word. So what in the world is a spam mail.. its just unwanted, unsolicited email. Such mails usually comes with the name of big companies like eBay, PayPal, etc... and also another funny way is by telling that you won a lottery and asking you to give your details to get the money and all. Aleast once everyone would have fallen in such pranks... lol.. The spammers get the emails from several sources. If you display your email in a public site, they can get the email easily (as far as i know its done by some softwares). So inorder to getrid of such spammers, we uses several measures like replacing "@" symbol with [at], "." with [dot] etc.. and also making images of email address instead of ordinary text (http://www.pingoat.com/goat/email_antispam ) . Such emails will look like this:

but these days those are also not so protective...
How to find whether an email is spam or not....
As you know, the spam emails contain links and it will direct you to an unsuspected site.. in most cases my this little trick will work mainly for outlook users. See the following screenshots of mails i got to my mail, stated to be from Ebay, Paypal etc...
Ebay and PayPal are not spammers. Spammers use their name for making people believe that the mail is not spam.. and also use the graphics same as the company emails. When you place your mouse pointer on any links (mostly "click here")
just have a look to the status bar... the link will be directing you to some ip(s), or other sites.. (ex: (dont click please) http://adsl-68-76-253-206.dsl.chcgil.ameritech.net:81/ws/eBayISAPI;..... blah blah blah goin on like that)
Thats the way to identify most spam emails. Another thing is that, they also place the verified signs (verisign etc..). I have some screenshots taken from outlook displaying how the link is directing us to spam site...
eBay fake mails
Paypal fake mails
Orginal mails
And now the orginal emails. If the sender is known to you, then dont worry. Or if u subscribe for newsletters and all. Also the status bar will show some links in the same domain.. (ex: clicks.ebay.in/... like that) This is a trusted mail:
Spam filter of Yahoo! mail
I had used Yahoo! Mail around 3 years back.. then i use it only for messenger. So after a while i used to delete the mails comming to yahoo. Then i noticed that most are not real mails.. but spam mails. Thus i started collecting a bunch of those.. now i think there are around 3000 spam mails in my INBOX.. thats the funny thing. Yahoo has a folder named SPAM. Its empty always. but instead my Inbox is flodded with the damn spams.. here are a few screen shots of the spam mails got in yahoo mail..
Spam filter of Gmail
I found the spam filter in gmail as effective than that of Yahoo Mail.. as on my experiance, i havnt got any.. absolute any, spams to my Inbox. but all got dumbed into Spam folder itself.. but instead i could find some non spam email, only a few, in spam folder... see the screenshot of the gmail spam folder..
From this article im not intending to say that Gmail is the best.. and Yahoo is the most people used mail. And both has its own features. i intend to show what the spam mail looks like and how to identify them, also i must say that yahoo must improve their spam protection.
This article is completely my view points and not taken from anyother sites. Original Date : Aug 12 2006
Screenshots are nearly 1 year old. But the status of Yahoo mail and Gmail are still the same. I have nearly 5000 spam mails in my Yahoo Inbox now and Gmail has not yet let any spam mails to my Inbox.
